I’m Mathias, your host at Easy German from Austria. On this page you’ll find more about Austrian German, my videos, my podcast appearances, my favourite music, books and TV series — for real Austrian German and the culture that comes with it.
Dialects & Austrian German
Austrian German is its own official standard variety, just like the German spoken in Germany or Switzerland. We say Jänner instead of Januar, Sackerl instead of Tüte, and order a Semmerl instead of a Brötchen. And as soon as things get more relaxed, you’ll hear different dialects all across the country — from the sing-song Viennese to Tyrolean (which even some Germans can barely understand).
Almost all of Austria belongs to the Bavarian-Austrian dialect area; only Vorarlberg in the west speaks Alemannic and therefore sounds almost Swiss. In everyday life we constantly switch between dialect and standard German, depending on who we’re talking to. That makes the language incredibly lively — and that’s exactly what this is all about.
By the way, from me you’ll hear a Salzburg dialect (from the Flachgau) with influences from Upper Austria – and, since I’ve been in Vienna for so long, from Vienna too. Oida!

Cari and I have been friends for many years. We first met at an award event in Graz, where we were both honoured for our projects. That first encounter quickly turned into a friendship – and a series of joint projects, including the Digital Participation Camp, where Easy German was developed further, among other things.
Since then, Cari and I have seen a lot of the world together – and hopefully many more destinations will follow.
In January 2014 we filmed our first Easy German episode together. Today I’m the host of Easy German Austria.

This website is hosted by ALL-INKL.COM - Neue Medien Münnich, owner René Münnich, Hauptstraße 68 | D-02742 Friedersdorf. When the site is accessed, the host automatically records technically necessary server log files (IP address, time, requested file, data volume, browser type, operating system, referrer) in order to deliver the site securely and reliably. The pronunciation of the example words is loaded as an audio file pre-recorded by Mathias from our own server and played locally. Your microphone is not accessed, and no voice recordings of visitors are created or stored.
